Legend of Zelda for Wii Virtual Console Game Review

Legend of ZeldaBack in 1985, the Nintendo Entertainment System was a new and exciting video game system with cutting edge technology.  That very same year, a groundbreaking game was released called The Legend of Zelda.  This game was groundbreaking in that you had the ability to go in four directions and quest.  While you could go in four directions with Pac-Man, for the first time you had a solid story, quest, and innovative gameplay in your very own home instead of the arcade.  It also had a primitive save system that allowed you to save your progress without the use of a password.  The original Legend of Zelda is available on the Nintendo Wii’s Virtual Console for 500 points and is a must download for all gamers.

The Legend of Zelda puts you in the shoes of Link, a young hero who must gather eight pieces of the Triforce to save the beautiful princess Zelda from the monstrous tyrant Gannon, who has taken over the land of Hyrule and reigns supreme from his dungeon on Death Mountain.  This is the game that started it all so it’s a treat to see all of the standards of the series develop in the first game.

The controls are a spot on transition from the NES remote to the Wii remote.  Simply tilt the Wiimote to its side and you have the old school NES controller.  It’s much better to play it with the Wiimote than with the other remotes as it provides the most authentic experience of the original.  The controls are pretty responsive but compared to A Link to the Past, you will really miss the ability to move diagonally.

The gameplay is fun and addictive.  Even though it is outdated, it still holds up.  The combat is fun and using the treasures such as the boomerang, bow, and others for the first time is a blast.  The graphics and sound are a perfect port of the original NES version.  I still love looking at it even though it is a complete joke compared to the power of the Wii.  The sound is eight bit bliss.  The music of Zelda has always been great and this is the game that establishes that precedent.

The Legend of Zelda is a great game that is well worth the 500 Nintendo points to download.  They improve upon the save system from the NES and give you a perfect port of the game.  It is one of the few games that I can universally recommend to all gamers because it appeals to so many genres and types of gamers.  Younger gamers can learn the ropes of gaming and play one of the most important games in video game history.  Older gamers can relive the glory days of the old NES.  The Legend of Zelda helped forward the home console’s dominance over the arcades and proved that Nintendo was not a one character pony with Mario.  It also cemented Shigeru Miyamoto’s status as the best in the gaming business of the 1980’s, a reputation he would build upon over the next two decades to become the undisputed king of video games and the most important person in the history of the industry.
