Mario Golf Virtual Console Wii Game Review

Mario Golf Wii VCGolf. It is one of the most popular sports in the world and closely followed by millions. During the glory days of the Nintendo 64, a golf game was released featuring all of the popular characters of the Mario series entitled Mario Golf. The game went on to be a major hit for the console and was widely heralded for its simplification of golf and for introducing the sport to a new audience. Now you can download Mario Golf on your Nintendo Wii on the Virtual Console for 1000 Nintendo Points.

Mario Golf is a game that allows you to golf as one of the many characters of the Mario series over multiple courses. Characters in the game include Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Toadstool, King Koopa, Baby Mario, Donkey Kong, and many others. Each golfer has their own unique shots, playing style, and characteristics. To maximize your gameplay, you need to pick the right character that fits your playing style.

The presentation, while very good in the old days, has become out dated. The graphics are old and not nostalgic enough to warrant fond memories. The graphics will actually cost you several strokes on the putting green as it is impossible to read slopes on the green right to left or left to right unless it is incredibly obvious. This adds to the frustration of the game as you will miss several puts you wouldn’t miss on the Tiger Woods or Wii Sports games. The sound is ported well from the Nintendo 64 version. The sound effects are basically the same as Super Mario 64, and they do succeed in adding a sense of nostalgia to the game. The controls are incredibly simple, and the highlight of the game. There are few button presses and little to no learning curve making it the best feature of the game.

There are a multitude of different gameplay modes that include a tournament mode, match play, stroke play, a ring mode which forces you to hit your shots through rings, a get character mode which allows you to unlock new characters by defeating them in match play, and others. Most of the gameplay modes are fun and simple to pick up. While the modes are tough to beat initially, the game becomes easier as you unlock new characters and perfect your game.

As for the actual gameplay, it is fairly decent compared to today’s standards. Most parts of the game are still fun, but the primitive nature of the game can cause you to misread things, which can be annoying. The courses are creative and fun in their layouts which I also like. The AI is good at times but as each game progresses, the AI seems to degrade itself into golf ineptitude.

Mario Golf was a great game back in the day, and while it can still provide a few laughs and memories of nostalgia, it just can’t hold up against the newer golf games as they are more advanced technologically. It’s nice to play as the Mario characters and I like the simple arcadesque gameplay. For $10, it’s a decent game, but I can only recommend it to people that love all things Mario, or fans of the N64.
