My Aquarium for WiiWare Game Review

My Aquarium WiiWareMy Aquarium is a popular download for the Nintendo Wii under the WiiWare banner. It is on sale in the WiiWare store for 500 Nintendo points and is a good buy. It delivers most of the perks of an aquarium and only few of the downsides.

My Aquarium is a virtual pet sim that gives you up to six different aquariums to populate with fish. My Aquarium features thirteen fish initially and as you spend time with your tanks and fish, different species will become unlocked. In total there are forty nine species.

My aquarium looks very good on the Wii. The fish look like their real life counterparts and also move like them. The tanks look real and so do the background objects. The sounds are impressive too. My aquarium sounds just like a fish tank, and also gives you a variety of classical music to choose from to play in the background.

The interface is very easy to use. There is about a five minute learning curve but after that the game will become second nature. All of the functions are done with the Wii Remote. It is like using a mouse on a PC.

As far as interaction, there are lots to do in My Aquarium. You can build your tank from the ground up with sand, gravel, rocks, driftwood, plants, coral and sea anemones. You then choose your background and lighting and then you are ready to add fish. With forty nine different species to choose from, the sky is the limit. You can even mix fresh and salt water fish without any consequences.

That being said there are several pros and cons of My Aquarium. Coming from someone who has a real aquarium, I know it can be difficult to take care of at times; especially if the tank is neglected for a time. With My Aquarium, the tank needs no maintenance. Anytime you feel like it, you can play with it, and if you don’t want to there are no repercussions. The game is also incredibly soothing and relaxing. Just ten minutes a day of this game will relieve countless stress and revitalize your mind, much like looking at a real fish tank.

As for the cons, it can be inaccurate at times as to the behavior of fish. Clown Loaches in this game swim at the top of the tank while in real life they are mostly bottom dwellers. Arawonas don’t eat everything in tank in the game while they will consume everything they can in real life. The mixing of fresh and salt water fish should not be allowed because it is almost impossible to achieve in nature with any kind of consistency. Also, while the game is a very satisfying experience, it’s still not as good as the real thing, but few things are.

All in all, My Aquarium is still a very good WiiWare title that showcases some of the best ideas the Wii has to offer. It’s great for people who want most of the benefits of a fish tank, without the responsibilities of taking care of it. It’s also great for people who want to relax and add ambience to their room. I highly recommend My Aquarium due to its relaxing nature and cheap price.
